Writing a Crossover Scholarly Book: Ideas on Fire Publishing Series
Tuesday, November 10, 2026 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EST)
Description
What does it take to help a scholarly book reach readers both inside and beyond the academy?
Join Ideas on Fire for a conversation about the craft and publishing strategy behind crossover scholarly books. Bringing together acquisitions editors, series editors, authors, and other publishing professionals, this free session will explore how crossover books differ from both conventional scholarly monographs and trade books—and what those differences mean for voice, structure, accessibility, argument, and audience.
For professional editors, the session offers insight into the editorial choices that can help authors make complex research engaging and accessible without sacrificing intellectual rigor. We’ll also examine how editors and authors can think strategically about audience and positioning as a manuscript develops, offering useful context for developmental editors, book coaches, and others who support scholarly authors.
Speakers:
- Courtney Berger, Executive Editor, Duke University Press
- Françoise N. Hamlin, Co-editor, Boundless South series, University of North Carolina Press
- Aymar Jèan Escoffery, co-founder of OTV, author of Reparative Media, MIT Press
