Academic editing entails much more than copyediting. Editors working with scholarly authors may provide a range of services throughout the life of a manuscript, from coaching and developmental editing to line editing, copyediting, proofreading, and indexing.

This webcast provides an overview of the major types of academic editing and the role each plays in the scholarly publishing process. You'll learn what distinguishes each service, the knowledge and skills they require, and how editors can determine which services best fit their interests and expertise. The session will also highlight the unique aspects of working with academic authors and offer practical guidance on building an academic editing practice.

Whether you're curious about entering the field or looking to expand the services you offer, you'll leave with a clearer understanding of the academic editing landscape and the opportunities it presents.

About the speaker


Cara M. Jordan is cofounder and chief operating officer of Flatpage, an editorial agency and publishing house specializing in academic and nonfiction publishing. She oversees a global team of editors and works closely with researchers, universities, museums, and publishers to develop, edit, and publish scholarly writing. An editor with more than 15 years of experience, Cara specializes in developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting for academic books, journal articles, and other scholarly publications. She holds a PhD in art history from the Graduate Center, CUNY, an editing certificate from UC San Diego Extended Studies, where she now teaches advanced copyediting courses, and is coeditor of The Art of Academic Editing: A Guide for Authors and Editors.
